I’ve never had an engagement session like this one. If we’re being honest, I’ve never had a summer like this one.

About 6 weeks ago, I stepped in a hole at a wedding and broke my ankle. One bad step and there went my wedding season. I’m still not allowed to walk. If you follow me on Facebook, you’ve probably read about how I’m covering my July and early August weddings with a series of amazing associate photographers. They’re doing a fantastic job standing in for me, but sometimes I just have to be there myself.

Due to a crazy series of events, Sam and Zac’s engagement session has had to be rescheduled a couple of times since last winter. Now that their wedding is coming up in about a month, it had to happen – and I really, really wanted to be the one to do it. I hope I’ll be able to shoot their wedding in late August, so I wanted them to get comfortable with me as a photographer and figure out what kinds of poses work well for them.

So I grabbed my teenage assistant, loaded up my car with crutches and a knee scooter and headed over to Olympic Sculpture Park for a gorgeous sunset Seattle engagement session. I’ve never shot at Olympic before but I was excited about the variety of backgrounds – and, if we’re being honest, the gentle, sloping ramps that would make it easier for me to scoot around.

Sam and Zac were so patient as I slowly made my way up and down the gravel paths looking for interesting backgrounds and gorgeous light. And did we EVER find gorgeous light. It was a beautiful July evening, with the sun heading down over the Olympics and the water glistening. What a perfect place for a Seattle engagement session.

But even more important than the light, Sam and Zac were fantastic. They’re naturals in front of the camera, easily affectionate and funny. I had such a great time and I can’t wait for their wedding! Now that I’ve spent a little more time with them, I’m determined to be there. Thanks for the motivation to heal faster, you two!
